Ignition timing

I’ve begun learning a bit about ignition timing but maybe some of you can explain better.

I’m still figuring out tuning this bigger carb so it isn’t probably tuned yet. Should I keep working at tuning the carb before touching ignition timing or is this not necessary?

Also how does one know when they should touch the timing? I’m thinking of Retarding the timing but i’m not sure how much to shave off the woodruff.

The guys running ground timing keys usually grind ½ of the timing key away. You can also take the key completely out, & use star washers & flat washer to set your timing where ever you want it.
