Turn your cardboard cutout the opposite direction and then see if it fits...You got the angle edge against the seat post, not the straight edge...lol...lol

I'll try that later (away from home right now). I saw a guy using this orientation in a video - is it wrong? idk i haven't installed a bike engine yet

How about a full size pic of the Hyper bike model your trying to put a motor on and see who has one that they have done this to???

I know they fit my Hyper beach cruiser with no problem.

That looks to be correct orientation.
