friction engaging problem

when i engage friction drive it shuts engine off,yes i have tried idling it up a little,new at this please help.Exhausted my efforts.
 
Yes...pedaling to get it moving first is kinda a must on a friction drive bike as it is designed to maintain momentum once it is rolling, not starting out from a dead stop and not keeping it engaged once it is stopped, unless of course you don't like your tires and enjoy letting the friction eat em up in two days...lol.
 
I had one of those 38cc bike berry friction drive kits. If I tightened the tensioner to hard on the tire the clutch bell would hit the clutch pads on the engine while idling and it would kill it, so you'd have to loosen it just a tad. That was my only real complaint about that kit.
