First time starting

Can I take the spark plug out and turn the engine over to see if I have spark? I never tried to start this engine yet it’s never been run. I’m just curious if I go to try starting it I will know if I have spark before trying to start it. Or would that be bad for the engine just turning it over without any fuel for lube in the cylinder and scratching the rings and cylinder

Just spray a bit of 2 stroke oil down in the cylinder for lubrication. You can pull the plug, and stick it back in the boot. Then ground the plug to the block. You should be able to see the spark jump across the gap.
