I think your valves need readjusted & I would also make sure your compression release is adjusted right.
 
120 grit and 220 grit sand paper on plate glass

Start with 120 and finish with 220
Use the black sharpie trick to check your work and know when your flat

Ya probably wanna check the cyl deck for flatness, Yeah I know the cyl is new / newish, but they're famous for having a low spot over the exhaust port
 
It's looking like I probably have to do this by myself, I have experience working on typewriters and some other antiques but nothing like an engine or carburetor, I have some tools but probably not enough, do any of you have some recommendations on what I might need and what to approach first? or some kind of guide
