Not that it surprises me, but I'm organising a ride in the (not immediate) area and was hoping to take my bike by train, but motorised bikes are specifically forbidden.

Times have changed - when I was a kid I used to regularly take my XR75 from Melbourne to Echuca by train. The only limitation was that the tank had to be emptied first. (Not even any mention of fumes in the tank.)

The rules for bikes, from Conditions of Travel:-
Bikes and other wheels
Bikes are permitted on trains free of charge, except if any part of the journey is made between 6.00am and 9.00am or 3.30pm and 7.30pm on weekdays.

Customers travelling during those times must purchase a child ticket for the bike as well as their own ticket.

Please ensure your bike does not block doors and passageways. Riding bikes, skateboards, scooters or skates on stations and trains is not permitted. Motorised scooters or bikes with petrol motors are not permitted.

Have to find another way of getting there. Might just carry some 2-stroke and a mixing bottle and ride to the ride.
