Pusher trailer

Hey guys,

After a *miserable* (and costly) experience with a cheap Chinese frame-mounted engine a year ago, I have decided to giving motorized bikes another shot. This time, I'm taking a different approach.

I want to keep the power system completely separated from my bike, so I can attach and detach it as needed. I have come to the conclusion that a bike pusher is the best way to accomplish this.

I am a bicycle mechanic but I have very little experience with small engines. I have tons of questions that I am mostly afraid to ask. For example, I have no idea how sprockets are attached to axels. Could you suggest some basic reading that would help me get into this field?

Second, does anyone have any suggestions as to what engine/platform to use for this? I live in a relatively flat area but I do have a few hills, so I was thinking of an internally geared bicycle hub.

Thanks for all the help!

pusher bike

After thinking about your idea I came up with this idea, it is only a brief drawing. but maybe it will give some more ideas. Use a rack mount engine with a jack shaft to get the chain to drive an internal shift hub.

I know a mini bike supplier. You could modify them so it hooks up to your bike post like the videos. I can get you a complete mini bike for under 275.00 including shipping. If modified, It would have everything you need to customize to make a pusher trailer. Look at the first dragon fly link. then compare to the minibike photos on the bottom. graucho

I can definitely see the resemblance. But how's the engine quality on those cheap minibikes?

The ones I bought for my grandsons are lifan 98cc. 2.5 hp. If you think you need more HP, find a 5hp. and swop it out. My point is, If you had a mini bike to start with, you would have all of the components. Framing, centrifical clutch, wheels, bearings, axles, steering neck, braking, throttle, carb linkage etc. etc. One stop shopping. I haven't done it yet, but when I do, that's where i'm heading.

I've been thinking...dangerous as that is for me but, I have a 50cc scooter that I'm not totally in love with. It's in excellent condition but is uncomfortable to ride so why not disassemble and reassemble the scooter rear as a trailer pusher? There are all kind of possibilities with this idea...any input from the more mechanically inclined than me?
