my bike won't slow down. i have to hold the brake

when i start my bike and hit the gas, it won't slow down if i release or turn the handle bar thing. the only way i can go slow is to hold the brake the whole time. help!!

Handle bar thing... you mean throttle? It should return to the idle position when you let it go. If not something is wrong with your throttle setup. Make sure it spins freely on the handle bar and returns to it's normal position after you let it go. If not you may have to reposition it so that is spins freely on the handlebars.

what kind of kit do you have? sounds like the needle inside the throttle is getting jammed up, i had very similiar problems with my ht kit, it was due to the throttle peice that screw onto the carb was made wrong

you probably have your carb slide in wrong. it can go into the carb 2 ways, but only one way is right.
sounds to me like you have it in wrong, which is causing the throttle to stick.
if you take the slide out of the carb, look at it.
(the slide is the part that slides into the top of the carb where the throttle cable attaches).
you will see that the slide has 2 slots at the bottom (a short slot and a long slot).
the long slot needs to line up with the pin that's inside the carb on the side (the pin is on the right side of the carb when looking at it from above).
that long slot in the slide needs to slide down over the pin inside the carb. the short slot goes to the left side of the carb & this is where your idle screw rests. the idle screw is tapered and it lines up with this short slot on the left side. screw the idle screw in, and it raises the slide, which increases the idle rpm. screw the idle screw out & it lowers the slide, lowering the idle rpms.
either you have your slide in 180 degrees off, you have your idle screw turned all the way in, or your throttle cable is bound up causing the throttle to stick wide open.

i have the gold long needle like thing through the middle. the wire that runs up to the throttle is on the side. when i unscrew the piece from the carborator and pull the throttle, it pulls up and looks good.

what does the idle screw look like? that sounds like that is it but i don't know where it is???

The slide is the barrel looking thing that's down inside the carb and the throttle cable hooks to it.
as I said, it can go in 2 different ways, but only one way Is correct.
the idle screw is the external screw on the left side of the carb and it will have a spring around the threads. the spring keep the screw from moving once you have the idle set.
but it won't matter if your slide is in wrong.
read my other message, make sure the slide us inserted into the carb correctly. you will have to unscrew the cap on top of the carb & lift up to pull the slide out. take it all the way out & make sure you have it in right (based on what I wrote in my other message)
If the slide is in wrong, turning the idle screw won't do anything, so make sure the slide is in thecarb the right day.
turn the idle screw out (counter click wise) to lower the idle doors. turn the idle screw in (click wise) to takes the idle speed.
if the slide is in wrong. the idle screw won't do anything.

He might be helping, but doesn't realize the 9yo made a post. He (dad) might not know what is wrong. There are plenty 54yo's that have no clue about engines.

Could be a tension issue on the throttle cable also... Try screwing around with the adjuster on the top of the carb and/or provide some tension along the cable by securing it to the frame.
