Tire Wiper for friction drive

that's them loquin

I found a place that sells 'em! loose screws ...

good find loquin -- that's them -- tire savers

while working in the bicycle shop back in the early 70's
we saw more than a few racing bikes come in with these
always looked to be ajdusted perfect
very slight, slight contact to tire

seem to be a (( fair )) idea regarding knocking something off of tire
before next time around drives it in deeper

note -- tire savers are made to fit older style road bike calipers
smooth tires only

Tire savers

Wow! I'm surprised such a simple idea has spawned so much comment!!
What a great find by loquin! Thanks!
I found a picture of 'tire savers' on ebay and will include it here. I'm not sure if that's the same thing loquin found but it's not quite what I had in mind.
I was more on the "Wheel Whiskers" idea posed earlier by Dave - a brush that would 'sweep' the tire.
(Also, 'Rubber Scrubber' is great!)
I have no experience with these metal devices so maybe they work great for what I'm thinking.
I was just trying to find a way to clean the tire before it hit the drive spindle. I thought this might reduce tire wear, spindle wear, flats and even in some small way dry a wet tire if you get caught in the rain with a friction drive.
(That's why I was originally thinking of a sponge...)
Anyway, I looked at mounting a brush to my bike yesterday and it looks feasible. I just have to get the right hardware...
I was thinking of a spring loaded device that would keep the brushes/sponge against the tire lightly.
Thanks to everyone for all the great comments and great ideas!

Maybe a 2 roller belt with built-in generator.Necessity is the mother of invention

Wheel Whiska pix

I bolted a whisk broom to my friction drive frame so it sweeps the tire just before the tire meets the drive spindle.
As you'll see from the pictures, I spent a considerable amount of time, money and effort on an elaborate system that is custom made and extremely professional looking.
I went for a 2 mile trip as an experiment and it seemed to work in that nothing went wrong.
Actually, I have no idea if it's making any difference and I guess I'll just leave this contraption on for a while to see what happens.
I suppose I'll have to endure all the people who will undoubtedly stop me and ask where I bought such an attractive accessory for my bike.
I'm considering selling these for only 3 easy payments of $99.95!!!
I've decided on a name:

Wheel Whiska

HT to Dave for the idea!

Dave
I know...
If it comes loose, I'm in for some exciting riding!!
:helmet:
As you said, one needs to do regular maintenance checks before, during and after each ride!
I'm watching it like a hawk.
In fact, the need to keep a sharp eye on it has spurred me to act on another idea that's been banging around in my head for a long time.
See, I'm going to get a video camera and bolt it to the frame back there and put a monitor up on my handlebars.
That way...

Patent Pending i bet.
The only thing i would be concerned about is debris ending-up on the chain/sprocket combination.Let us know if u notice anything.

with the true tire savers used
a much better way to be sure of removing the most debris from tire
with the very least amount of friction to the tire

I was always amazed while checking these tire savers out
on bikes that came in to the shop for repair
how nice they were formed to the tire
and caused almost no resistance

ride that motor bike thing
