My Schwinn has a Schwinn luggage rack, which is okay. I am putting together a second bike from parts, so I go to Ace a lot for things, LOL. Wandering the aisles I found something that just seemed right.

Rubbermaid makes a mailbox holder. It is strong heavy molded plastic and costs about $10.

I was in the store getting some angle aluminum for another part of the bike, custom chain tensioner. You can buy a 4 foot piece for $9, all I needed was about 6" but they don't sell that. For $15 you can get 8 feet instead.

Some screws, from the rack mounting kits for computer equipement, which are the same size as the holes on the frame of the bike (M5) and nuts is all it takes to complete the project.

So for under $25 you can have a nice solid strong carrier on the back of your bike.

I will try to post a picture of the completed carrier, for now I just posted the mailbox mounting bracket. You could even actually put a mailbox on the back of your bike, LOL.

So true AZ. Now this is a blatant plug for ACE HARDWARE. I don't know about a lot of their stores but the one by my house is filled with a heck of a lot of nice people. They are alway helpful, like they used to be at Home Depot. They know I am working on a bike, they have seen my other bike. A few have come out to see it. They work with me to find solutions for what ever weird thing I am building and I build some weird stuff. If they don't have what I need they will refer me to someone that does.

hard to believe how many good THINGS our country Ace Hardware Store has

a guy was in Ace the other day
I was looking for a what one may call -- special hard to find little part
this fellow had his micrometer out and was measuring THINGS
yes - he would know the answer to my question
he helped set me up with all the parts needed -- found them in Ace
the guy it turns makes custom Hot Rods

he likes to ride those things also

Sorry, no on the rack it is staying on the Schwinn bike. They are cheap you can pick one up at Walmart, Target, probably even Kroger Foods for around $15.

So I finally am getting around to posting the pic of the rack installed. This pic includes the ice chest option:giggle: Which can be folded flat when not in use. I riveted a latch on the back of the ice chest and back of rack I have 2 bolts that I use to secure the front of the chest to the rack

I also am able to easily strap on a "real" milk crate as well as those smaller cheap knock offs. I do have to stand on the pedal to mount the bike with anything as high as the ice chest.

I am trying to find a smaller box to attach that is easier to get my leg over when mounting the bike. I am thinking shoebox size (okay, I will come clean call it 12 pack size) should do it.

I keep my tools and water bottle in a "fanny pack" that the casino gave me a couple years ago. It now straps on behind and below the seat, I didn't want the tools to get wet from any ice.

FYI I don't drink beer, except I did have some Alaskan ale the other day and was able to swallow it.

cooltoy, when I cross the border it is usually the Mexican border, but that did give me a couple of good ideas. Hard plastic turns into broken plastic, the heat here in the summer is a little intense. The Schwinn and Raleigh rack bags look like options for me. I will have to see where I can find them.
