  1. re: chain too short. It takes a little practice, but you can get a feel for pushing the pin through one side plate, and nearly but not quite out of the other. This will allow you to "snap" a piece of chain in one of the opened links to test fit, and to push the pin back in to complete the link. The chain must be totally lined up straight and not under tension, (well, you can bend the link you are pinning a little). Otherwise, you may sheer a small flake of metal from the side plate, which can cause a snapped chain later.
